Two traditions, one personal choice

Monthly birthstones depend on the calendar month; zodiac gemstone associations depend on sign-specific cultural and astrological traditions. Lists differ, and some people choose purely for colour or sentiment. Neither system provides scientific evidence that a stone changes personality, health or destiny.

UNDERSTANDING THE DATES

What is a sun sign?

The Western tropical zodiac divides the Sun’s apparent annual path into twelve sections. The dates shown here are commonly used approximate boundaries; exact sign transitions can vary by year, time and location. Being near a cusp may call for a precise birth chart rather than a date-only label.

Vedic or sidereal astrology uses a different zodiac framework. A gemstone prescribed in a Vedic tradition should not be conflated with a Western sun-sign birthstone, and neither establishes the gem’s geological identity.

YOUR GEMSTONE, YOUR WAY

Start with a story. Finish with a choice you love.

Start with a birthday

If you know the date, check the monthly birthstone first. Aries, for example, crosses March and April, so a March Aries gift needn't feature April's diamond.

Look at the actual gemstone

Colour alone cannot tell you whether a stone is natural, laboratory-grown, dyed or treated. Compare the listing's facts, photographs, dimensions and care advice.

Think about daily wear

A stone that shines in earrings may not suit an everyday ring. A protected setting, lifestyle and jewellery dimensions often matter more than the zodiac label.

Why do zodiac gemstone lists disagree?

There isn't one universal zodiac gemstone list. Historical lapidaries, modern Western astrology, birth-month conventions and regional traditions each associate stones differently. Two writers may therefore recommend different gems for the same sign without discussing the same tradition. GEMHOOD identifies these associations as cultural inspiration and pairs them with the material facts you can use in a real purchase.

Not interested in astrology? That's fine too. A stone can be meaningful because you chose its colour, because it reminds you of a place, or because it celebrates someone important.
